Position Overview: Affirm is revolutionizing credit to offer a more honest and user-friendly experience, allowing consumers to purchase now and pay later without hidden fees or compounding interest. The Decisions and Pricing team's mission is to provide optimal credit decisions for Affirm consumers while ensuring positive unit economics and serving as the highest converting and most competitive payment solution for our merchant partners. The decisioning system and ML models managed by this team are crucial for serving millions of consumers and merchant partners.

What You'll Do:

• Collaboration & Product Development: Support peers and stakeholders throughout the product development lifecycle by collaborating with product management, design, and analytics. Participate in ideation, articulate technical constraints, and partner on decisions considering risks and trade-offs.
• Team Leadership & Delivery: Own and deliver quarterly goals for the team, guiding engineers through ambiguity to solve open-ended problems, and ensuring team support during delivery.
• Proactive Problem Solving: Identify project, process, technology, or business issues, advocate for solutions, and lead their resolution.
• Operations & Availability: Support the operations and availability of team artifacts by creating and monitoring metrics, escalating issues as needed, and contributing to "keeps the lights on" and on-call efforts.
• Culture of Quality & Ownership: Foster a culture of quality and ownership by setting or improving code review and design standards for the team, and advocating for them beyond the team through writing and tech talks.
• Talent Development: Help develop team talent by providing feedback and guidance, and leading by example.
• Hands-on Development: Build APIs and data models within micro-service and event-driven architectures. Create parallelizable and idempotent batch jobs for processing large datasets.
• Platform Improvement: Enhance the current platform's extensibility, performance, and usability to support rapid global deployment, scaling, and expansion.
• On-Call Rotation: Participate in an on-call rotation as a requirement of the role.

What We Look For:

• Experience: 4+ years of experience designing, developing, and launching backend systems at scale using languages such as Python and Kotlin/Java.
• Distributed Systems: Proven track record of developing highly available distributed systems using technologies like AWS, MySQL, and Kubernetes.
• Programming Proficiency: Proficiency in object-oriented and dynamically typed languages.
• System Design: Ability to synthesize complex business, product, and technical requirements to consistently produce high-quality system designs and software.
• Architecture & Maintenance: Prior experience architecting, building, launching, and maintaining complex systems.
• Technical Planning & Code Quality: Experience defining technical plans for delivering significant feature or system components with elegant, simple, and extensible designs. Writes high-quality, easily understood, and reusable code.
• Large Codebase Management: Proficiency in making significant changes within large codebases, and experience developing tools and practices for safe modifications.
• Ownership & Growth: Demonstrated ownership of personal growth, proactively seeking feedback from team, manager, and stakeholders.
• Communication Skills: Strong written and verbal communication skills to effectively collaborate with a global engineering team.

• Pay Structure: Affirm utilizes a simple and transparent pay structure based on factors including location, experience, and job-related skills. New employees typically start at the beginning of the pay range.
