Job Description

Position Overview: Affirm is revolutionizing credit by offering a transparent and user-friendly "buy now, pay later" solution without hidden fees or compounding interest. The Decisions and Pricing team is dedicated to providing optimal credit decisions for Affirm consumers while ensuring positive unit economics and serving as a high-converting, competitive payment option for merchant partners. The decisioning system and ML models developed by this team are crucial for serving millions of consumers and merchant partners.

What You'll Do:

  • Team Leadership & Delivery: Own and deliver quarterly team goals, guiding engineers through complex, open-ended problems and ensuring their support throughout the delivery process.
  • Cross-Functional Collaboration: Support peers and stakeholders in the product development lifecycle by collaborating with product management, design, and analytics. Participate in ideation, articulate technical constraints, and make informed decisions considering risks and trade-offs.
  • Proactive Problem Solving: Identify and advocate for solutions to project, process, technology, or business issues, taking a leading role in their resolution.
  • Operational Excellence: Support the operations and availability of team artifacts by creating and monitoring metrics, escalating issues as needed, and contributing to "keep the lights on" and on-call efforts.
  • Quality & Ownership Culture: Foster a culture of quality and ownership by setting and improving code review and design standards for the team, and advocating for these standards beyond the team through writing and tech talks.
  • Talent Development: Contribute to the growth of team members by providing feedback, guidance, and leading by example.
  • Hands-on Development: Build APIs and data models within micro-service and event-driven architectures. Create parallelizable and idempotent batch jobs for processing large datasets.
  • Platform Improvement: Enhance the current platform's extensibility, performance, and usability to support rapid global deployment, scaling, and expansion.

What We Look For:

  • Experience: 4+ years of experience in designing, developing, and launching backend systems at scale using languages such as Python and Kotlin/Java.
  • Distributed Systems: Proven track record of developing highly available distributed systems using technologies like AWS, MySQL, and Kubernetes.
  • Language Proficiency: Proficiency in object-oriented and dynamically typed languages.
  • System Design: Ability to synthesize complex business, product, and technical requirements to produce high-quality system designs and software consistently.
  • End-to-End Ownership: Prior experience architecting, building, launching, and maintaining complex systems.
  • Technical Planning: Experience defining technical plans for delivering significant feature or system components with elegant, simple, and extensible designs.
  • Code Quality: Ability to write high-quality code that is easily understood and used by others.
  • Large Codebase Expertise: Proficiency in making significant changes within large codebases, with developed tools and practices for safe modifications.
  • Growth Mindset: Demonstrated ownership of personal growth, proactively seeking feedback from team members, managers, and stakeholders.
  • Communication Skills: Strong written and verbal communication skills to effectively collaborate with a global engineering team.
