Responsibilities

Plans computerized databases, including base definition, structure, documentation, long-range requirements, operational guidelines, and protection
Ensures accuracy and completeness of data in master files and various support tools, such as base dictionaries
Establishes and maintains security and integrity controls
Formulates and monitors policies, procedures, and standards relating to database management
Proposes and implements enhancements to improve system performance and reliability
Performs testing of database software, utilities, and patches in a test environment prior to production rollout
Identifies and resolves issues in the test environment
Performs migration of tested/approved software, utilities, and patches to production
Develops basic to moderately complex database configurations by creating database objects per business requirements and necessary test environments
Works closely with application developers to apply best practices and mitigate impacts to user groups or other database configurations
Coaches/mentors less experienced DBAs on routine/basic tasks
Completes authentication and authorization requests by creating/purging/maintaining user accounts and managing table/data permissions
Performs/sets up scheduled database audit procedures to track changes and takes corrective actions based on results
Schedules database backup tasks and ensures proper completion
Executes database recovery tasks during disaster recovery or exercises
Monitors database storage usage, reports growth trends, assists in forecasting future requirements, and develops long-term capacity plans
Performs routine maintenance (data compression, defragmentation, dropping temp tables, clearing transaction logs, archiving inactive databases, load balancing) and evaluates server hardware for performance recommendations
Monitors database performance to identify bottlenecks (inefficient queries, corrupt indexes, database design) and provides corrective recommendations
Performs regularly scheduled database statistic reporting
Ensures high availability of supported databases
Works with Applications Team on troubleshooting application failures, develops solutions to prevent future issues, and supports implementation
Produces and maintains operational database documentation (e.g., SQL Disaster Recovery, Naming Standards, Performance and Tuning)
Assists in training less experienced DBAs on company policies, procedures, techniques, and configurations
