Candidates must have significant professional experience with Ruby on Rails and PostgreSQL, along with strong database experience and demonstrated expertise in ClickHouse databases or similar analytical databases. Proven experience working with platforms or complex applications at large scale is required, as is expert-level familiarity with building and deploying software using CI/CD or other internal tooling. A deep understanding of distributed, scalable, and reliable systems is essential, as is advanced user proficiency with modern DevOps platforms. Excellent English proficiency for remote and asynchronous work is necessary, along with advanced experience monitoring system health using tools like Prometheus or Grafana. A proven track record in analyzing metrics, developing automation scripts, and scaling systems is required, as is experience with Golang or the demonstrated ability to quickly learn new languages.
The Senior Backend Engineer will lead the development of Ruby on Rails backend components, leveraging high-scale data pipelines and collaborating with Product Management and other engineering stakeholders to maintain a high bar for quality. They will craft code that meets standards for style, maintainability, and best practices in a high-scale web environment, and advocate for these standards through code review. Responsibilities include working with other GitLab teams to integrate monitoring and insights features, developing secure, well-tested, and performant features and improvements to the GitLab product, and shipping features independently with minimal guidance. The engineer will also advocate for improvements to product quality, security, and performance, solve technical problems of high scope and complexity, provide technical leadership, and mentor junior and mid-level engineers on the team.
