Requirements

Candidates should possess a Bachelor’s degree in a relevant engineering field, such as mechatronics or software, and have at least 7 years of experience as a software engineer on complex mechanical systems, including design, construction, and operation of controls for industrial or large-scale equipment. Strong working knowledge of Python, C++, C, and other high-level languages, along with modern tools like GitHub and CI/CD release management is required, as well as experience with fieldbus systems such as EtherCAT and developing and tuning control loops.

Responsibilities

The Realtime Software Engineer will be responsible for the design, debug, and implementation of software and controls for advanced R&D equipment and machinery, collecting functional requirements from customers and producing software solutions to meet these requirements. They will work closely with simulation and test engineers to integrate software into testbeds, and collaborate with process teams to outline interfaces and requirements for equipment operation. Furthermore, they will engage with mechanical and electrical engineers on concepts and designs, work with external software contractors to develop control systems, and own the specification, design, testing, and implementation of key systems such as interlocks, sensors, and actuators.

Commonwealth Fusion Systems

Develops and commercializes fusion energy systems

About Commonwealth Fusion Systems

Commonwealth Fusion Systems focuses on developing fusion energy as a clean and sustainable power source. The company utilizes advanced magnet technology, created in partnership with MIT, to build smaller and more affordable fusion systems called tokamaks. These devices use magnetic fields to confine plasma in a toroidal shape, which is an effective method for achieving fusion. Currently, CFS is manufacturing high-temperature superconducting magnets and constructing SPARC, the first commercially-relevant net energy fusion machine. The success of SPARC is intended to lead to the development of ARC, the first fusion power plant. CFS differentiates itself from competitors by its commitment to scientific integrity and a mission-driven approach, focusing on delivering cost-competitive fusion energy to help combat climate change. The ultimate goal is to provide a reliable and abundant energy source for energy providers and industries that require significant power.
