Requirements

  • High School or GED Equivalent
  • Phlebotomy Technician (PBT) - American Society for Clinical Pathology (ASCP) (preferred)
  • Visual acuity adequate to perform position duties
  • Ability to communicate effectively with others, hear, understand, and distinguish speech and other sounds
  • Ability to work rotating shifts: 4am-12:30pm, 8am-4:30pm, 12pm-8:30pm, 2pm-10:30pm; every third weekend and holiday; occasional call time

Responsibilities

  • Perform venipuncture and capillary blood collection following approved techniques and policies for hospital inpatients and clinic outpatients
  • Organize specimen collection requests
  • Perform patient clinical laboratory specimen collection procedures, specimen transport, specimen processing, testing dispersal, point-of-care testing procedures, and other pre-analytic functions
  • Collect blood and other specimens in a competent manner to avoid repeat collections or valid complaints
  • Properly identify patients before specimen collection and explain procedures, providing necessary preparation and collection instructions
  • Complete patient registration and test order computer data entry as required
  • Label, transport, or store collected specimens accurately and timely
  • Communicate professionally and efficiently with internal and external customers via telephone, pager, or in person
  • Interpret inpatient and outpatient test orders to determine appropriate collection time and specimen types
  • Perform selected point-of-care testing according to established standards
  • Assist with analysis, collection, and maintenance of records as required by regulatory agencies and/or federal, state, or local law
