Requirements

Functions under direct supervision of a licensed nurse
Compliance with organization policies, procedures, training, and state/federal regulations
Knowledge of dialysis therapy, including Online Clearance Monitoring (OLC), Adequacy Monitoring Program (AMP), Urea Kinetic Modeling (UKM), disease process, and vascular access
Ability to perform vascular access evaluation, cannulation, and heparin administration as delegated or allowed by state law
Skills in operating hemodialysis machines, including setup, programming for Ultrafiltration (UF) goal, treatment time, UF modeling, and enabling safety alarms (e.g., Narrow Venous Limits at 160)
Ability to monitor patients, evaluate responses, perform vital signs, weights, and interventions per physician orders
Accurate documentation skills for treatment sheets, progress notes, vital signs, and parameters
Ability to conduct machine safety checks and report changes to RN/supervisor
Knowledge of hemostasis, dressings, blood spill cleanup, and lab specimen preparation
Efficiency in supply/equipment use to prevent wastage
Support for Quality Enhancement Program (QEP), CQI activities, patient satisfaction, and process improvements

Responsibilities

Assist in patient education on adequacy measures (OLC, AMP, UKM) and disease/access
Welcome patients, inquire about wellbeing, and evaluate vascular access pre-treatment
Obtain pre/post vital signs, weights, and perform vascular access evaluations
Cannulate vascular access and administer heparin as allowed
Initiate dialysis per orders (QB, QD), monitor intradialytic issues, and intervene as prescribed
Monitor patient response, obtain vital signs pre-reinfusion, discontinue treatment, evaluate prior to termination/discharge
Achieve hemostasis, apply dressings, and perform/record pre/post evaluations
Calculate and enter patient-specific dialysis programming (UF goal, time, modeling)
Ensure safety alarms are enabled and record vital signs/treatment parameters accurately
Document all treatment info, complete sheets/notes, and report changes to RN/supervisor
Observe patients, perform machine safety checks, document interventions for unusual status
Monitor vascular access during treatment (pressures), intervene/report as needed
Obtain lab tests, prepare specimens, clean blood spills per policy
Prepare/organize supplies/equipment efficiently
Monitor self-care patients under RN supervision
Assist in training direct patient care staff
Maintain safe/clean environment and support QEP/CQI activities
