Requirements

Functions under direct supervision of a licensed nurse
Compliance with organization policies, procedures, training, and state/federal regulations
Knowledge of dialysis therapy, including Online Clearance Monitoring (OLC), Adequacy Monitoring Program (AMP), Urea Kinetic Modeling (UKM), disease process, and vascular access
Ability to perform vascular access evaluation, cannulation, and heparin administration as delegated or allowed by state law
Skills in operating hemodialysis machines, including setup, programming for Ultrafiltration (UF) goal, treatment time, UF modeling, and enabling safety alarms (e.g., Narrow Venous Limits at 160)
Ability to obtain vital signs, weights, and perform pre/post dialysis evaluations
Proficient in documentation on Hemodialysis Treatment Sheet and progress notes
Capability to monitor patients, evaluate intradialytic problems, and intervene as prescribed
Knowledge of hemostasis, dressings, blood spill cleanup, and lab specimen preparation
Ability to conduct machine safety checks and report changes to RN/supervisor

Responsibilities

Assist in patient education on adequacy measures, disease process, and access
Welcome patients, inquire about wellbeing, and evaluate vascular access pre-treatment
Obtain pre/post treatment vital signs, weights, and perform vascular access evaluation
Initiate, monitor, and discontinue dialysis treatments per prescribed orders (e.g., QB, QD)
Calculate and enter patient-specific dialysis machine programming (UF goal, time, modeling)
Record vital signs, treatment parameters, and evaluations accurately and timely
Document all patient treatment information, including Hemodialysis Treatment Sheet and progress notes
Report significant patient changes or unusual findings to RN/supervisor
Perform and document interventions for patient status or machine issues
Monitor arterial/venous pressures, provide interventions, and evaluate access during treatment
Obtain prescribed lab testing and prepare specimens
Clean blood spills, manage supplies/equipment to prevent wastage, and maintain safe/clean environment
Support Quality Enhancement Program (QEP), CQI activities, and process improvements
Observe patients and perform machine safety checks per facility policy
Assist in training direct patient care staff on applicable programs
