Requirements

  • CHT (Certified Hemodialysis Technologist) certification required
  • Functions under direct supervision of a licensed nurse
  • Compliance with FMCNA policies, procedures, training, and state/federal regulations

Responsibilities

  • Assist in patient education on adequacy measures (OLC, AMP, UKM) and disease process/access
  • Welcome patients, inquire about well-being, and evaluate vascular access for patency
  • Obtain pre- and post-treatment vital signs and weight
  • Perform vascular access cannulation and administration of Heparin as delegated or allowed by state law
  • Initiate dialysis treatment per prescribed orders (blood flow QB, dialysate flow QD)
  • Evaluate intradialytic problems, monitor patient response, and provide interventions as prescribed
  • Obtain vital signs prior to reinfusion, discontinue treatment, evaluate patient prior to termination of venous access (standing/sitting BP), achieve hemostasis, and apply dressings
  • Evaluate patient prior to discharge and record pre/post dialysis evaluations, weight, and vital signs
  • Calculate and enter patient-specific dialysis machine programming (UF goal, treatment time, Na modeling, UF modeling)
  • Ensure safety alarms are enabled (e.g., Narrow Venous Limits 160)
  • Record accurate vital signs and treatment parameters on Hemodialysis Treatment Sheet with initial identification
  • Document patient treatment information, including progress notes if applicable
  • Report significant information or changes in patient condition to PCT III or nurse supervisor
  • Observe patient and conduct machine safety checks; report changes or unusual findings
  • Perform and document interventions for unusual patient status
  • Evaluate vascular access during treatment (arterial/venous pressures), provide interventions, document, and report unusual findings
  • Obtain prescribed laboratory testing and prepare specimens
  • Maintain environmental integrity, ensure areas are safe and clean
  • Clean and disinfect dialysis machine, chair, equipment, and surrounding area between treatments
  • Perform tasks for preparation of dialysis treatment and document
  • Conduct pretreatment dialysis machine alarm testing
