Responsibilities

  • Assist in patient education on adequacy measures (OLC, AMP, UKM) and disease process/access
  • Welcome patients, inquire about wellbeing, and evaluate vascular access for patency
  • Obtain pre- and post-treatment vital signs, weight, and perform vascular access evaluation
  • Initiate, monitor, and discontinue dialysis treatments per prescribed orders, including blood flow (QB), dialysate flow (QD), UF goal, treatment time, and UF modeling
  • Evaluate intradialytic problems, provide interventions as prescribed, and monitor patient response
  • Ensure safety alarms are enabled (e.g., Narrow Venous Limits at 160)
  • Record accurate vital signs, treatment parameters, and documentation on Hemodialysis Treatment Sheet and progress notes
  • Report significant changes or unusual findings to registered nurse or supervisor
  • Perform and document machine safety checks and interventions for unusual patient status
  • Evaluate vascular access during treatment, monitor pressures, and intervene as needed
  • Obtain prescribed laboratory testing and prepare specimens
  • Clean blood spills with appropriate disinfectant
  • Prepare, organize, and utilize supplies/equipment efficiently to prevent wastage
  • Monitor patients performing self-care under RN supervision
  • Support Quality Enhancement Program (QEP), CQI activities, and process improvements
  • Assist in maintaining a safe and clean working environment
  • Setup and operate hemodialysis machines
  • Perform pre- and post-dialysis evaluations, obtain hemostasis, and apply dressings
  • Evaluate patient prior to discharge
