Responsibilities

Assist in patient education on adequacy measures (OLC, AMP, UKM) and disease process/access
Welcome patients and inquire about their wellbeing
Evaluate vascular access for patency, perform cannulation, and administer heparin as delegated or allowed by state law
Obtain pre- and post-treatment vital signs, weight, and vascular access evaluation
Initiate dialysis treatment per prescribed orders (QB, QD)
Evaluate intradialytic problems and intervene as prescribed
Monitor patients’ response to dialysis therapy
Obtain vital signs prior to reinfusion and perform discontinuation functions; document
Discontinue treatment per procedures, evaluate patient (standing/sitting BP), obtain hemostasis, and apply dressings
Evaluate patient prior to discharge
Perform and record pre- and post-dialysis evaluations, weight, and vital signs with initial identification
Calculate and enter patient-specific dialysis programming (UF goal, treatment time, UF modeling)
Ensure safety alarms are enabled (e.g., Narrow Venous Limits 160)
Record vital signs and treatment parameters on Hemodialysis Treatment Sheet with initial identification
Document patient treatment information accurately and timely (Treatment Sheet, progress notes)
Report significant information or patient condition changes to RN or supervisor
Observe patient and conduct machine safety checks; report changes to RN/supervisor
Document interventions for unusual patient status and patient response
Evaluate vascular access during treatment (arterial/venous pressures), intervene as needed, document, and report unusual findings
Obtain prescribed laboratory testing and prepare specimens
Clean blood spills immediately with disinfectant per policy
Prepare, organize, and utilize supplies/equipment efficiently
Setup and operate hemodialysis machines
Assist in maintaining safe and clean working environment
Support Quality Enhancement Program (QEP), CQI activities, patient satisfaction, and process improvements
