Requirements

Functions under direct supervision of a licensed nurse
Compliance with organization policies, procedures, training, and state/federal regulations
Knowledge of dialysis therapy, including Online Clearance Monitoring (OLC), Adequacy Monitoring Program (AMP), Urea Kinetic Modeling (UKM), disease process/access
Ability to perform vascular access evaluation, cannulation, and heparin administration as delegated or allowed by state law
Skills in operating hemodialysis machines, including setup, programming for Ultrafiltration (UF) goal, treatment time, UF modeling, and enabling safety alarms (e.g., Narrow Venous Limits 160)
Ability to obtain vital signs, weights, and perform pre/post dialysis evaluations
Accurate documentation skills (e.g., Hemodialysis Treatment Sheet, progress notes)
Observation and intervention skills for patient and machine safety checks

Responsibilities

Assist in patient education on adequacy measures and disease process/access
Welcome patients, inquire about wellbeing, evaluate vascular access pre-treatment
Perform vascular access cannulation and heparin administration as allowed
Obtain pre/post treatment vital signs, weight, and vascular access evaluation
Initiate, monitor, and discontinue dialysis treatments per prescribed orders (e.g., QB, QD, UF modeling)
Evaluate intradialytic problems, intervene as prescribed, monitor patient response
Perform hemostasis, apply dressings, evaluate patient prior to discharge
Calculate and enter patient-specific dialysis machine programming
Record vital signs, treatment parameters, and complete documentation accurately
Report significant changes or unusual findings to RN/supervisor
Conduct machine safety checks, document interventions for unusual patient status
Monitor vascular access during treatment (arterial/venous pressures), intervene as needed
Obtain and prepare laboratory specimens
Clean blood spills per facility policy
Prepare, organize, and utilize supplies/equipment efficiently
Monitor patients performing self-care under RN supervision
Assist in training direct patient care staff
Support Quality Enhancement Program (QEP), CQI activities, process improvements, and patient satisfaction
Maintain safe and clean working environment
