Requirements

  • Functions under direct supervision of a licensed nurse
  • Compliance with organization policies, procedures, training, and state/federal regulations
  • Knowledge of dialysis therapy, including adequacy measures (OLC, AMP, UKM), disease process/access, vascular access evaluation, cannulation, heparin administration (as delegated or allowed by state law)
  • Ability to setup and operate hemodialysis machines, including programming for UF goal, treatment time, UF modeling, and enabling safety alarms (e.g., Narrow Venous Limits 160)
  • Skills in obtaining vital signs, weights, vascular access evaluation, initiating/discontinuing dialysis treatments, monitoring intradialytic problems, hemostasis, and applying dressings
  • Ability to perform machine safety checks, clean blood spills, prepare laboratory specimens, and manage supplies/equipment efficiently
  • Participation in Quality Enhancement Program (QEP), CQI activities, process improvements, and patient satisfaction initiatives
  • Accurate and timely documentation on Hemodialysis Treatment Sheet and progress notes
  • Ability to report changes in patient condition to RN or supervisor

Responsibilities

  • Assist in patient education on adequacy measures, disease process, and access
  • Welcome patients, inquire about wellbeing, evaluate vascular access for patency, cannulate access, administer heparin as allowed
  • Obtain pre- and post-treatment vital signs, weights, and perform vascular access evaluations
  • Initiate dialysis per prescribed orders (QB, QD), monitor patient response, evaluate intradialytic issues, and intervene as prescribed
  • Discontinue treatment per procedures, obtain vital signs prior to reinfusion, evaluate patient before termination of venous access and discharge
  • Calculate and enter patient-specific dialysis programming (UF goal, time, modeling)
  • Ensure safety alarms are enabled and perform/document machine safety checks
  • Record vital signs, treatment parameters, pre/post evaluations on Hemodialysis Treatment Sheet with initial identification
  • Document interventions for unusual patient status and report significant changes to RN/supervisor
  • Monitor vascular access during treatment (arterial/venous pressures), intervene as needed, and report unusual findings
  • Obtain prescribed lab testing, prepare specimens, clean blood spills per policy
  • Prepare/organize supplies and equipment to prevent wastage
  • Monitor patients performing self-care under RN supervision
  • Assist in training direct patient care staff on applicable programs
  • Maintain safe and clean working environment
  • Support QEP, CQI, process improvements for patient quality goals
