Requirements

Functions under direct supervision of a licensed nurse
Compliance with organization policies, procedures, training, and state/federal regulations
Knowledge of dialysis therapy, including Online Clearance Monitoring (OLC), Adequacy Monitoring Program (AMP), Urea Kinetic Modeling (UKM), disease process, and vascular access
Ability to perform vascular access evaluation, cannulation, and heparin administration as delegated or allowed by state law
Skills in operating hemodialysis machines, including setup, programming for Ultrafiltration (UF) goal, treatment time, UF modeling, and enabling safety alarms (e.g., Narrow Venous Limits at 160)
Ability to obtain vital signs, weights, and perform pre/post dialysis evaluations
Accurate documentation skills for Hemodialysis Treatment Sheet, progress notes, and treatment parameters
Observation and intervention skills for intradialytic problems and patient responses
Ability to clean blood spills, maintain safe/clean environment, and manage supplies/equipment efficiently
Participation in Quality Enhancement Program (QEP), CQI activities, and process improvements

Responsibilities

Assist in patient education on adequacy measures, disease process, and access
Welcome patients, inquire about wellbeing, and evaluate vascular access for patency
Obtain pre/post treatment vital signs, weights, and perform vascular access evaluations
Initiate, monitor, and discontinue dialysis treatments per prescribed orders (e.g., QB, QD)
Evaluate and intervene in intradialytic problems as prescribed or directed
Perform hemostasis, apply dressings, and evaluate patients prior to discharge
Calculate and enter dialysis machine programming (UF goal, treatment time, UF modeling)
Record vital signs, treatment parameters, and complete documentation with initial identification
Report significant changes or unusual findings to registered nurse or supervisor
Conduct machine safety checks and document interventions for patient status
Monitor arterial/venous pressures and provide interventions as needed
Obtain and prepare laboratory specimens
Clean blood spills per facility policy
Prepare/organize supplies and equipment to prevent wastage
Monitor patients performing self-care under RN supervision
Assist in training direct patient care staff on applicable programs
