Requirements

Functions as part of the dialysis health care team under direct supervision of a licensed nurse
Compliance with organization policies, procedures, training, and state/federal regulations
Ability to setup and operate hemodialysis machines
Knowledge of patient education on adequacy measures (e.g., OLC, AMP, UKM) and disease process/access
Skills in vascular access evaluation, cannulation, and heparin administration (as delegated or allowed by state law)
Ability to obtain vital signs, weights, and perform pre/post treatment evaluations
Proficiency in initiating, monitoring, and discontinuing dialysis treatments per prescribed orders
Capability to calculate and program dialysis machine parameters (e.g., UF goal, treatment time, UF modeling)
Ensuring safety alarms (e.g., Narrow Venous Limits 160) are enabled
Accurate and timely documentation on Hemodialysis Treatment Sheet and progress notes
Observation and machine safety checks per facility policy
Ability to perform interventions for intradialytic problems and unusual patient status
Handling of laboratory testing, specimen preparation, blood spills, and supply management
Support for Quality Enhancement Program (QEP), CQI activities, and process improvements

Responsibilities

Assist in patient education on adequacy measures, disease process, and access
Welcome patients, inquire about wellbeing, and evaluate vascular access pre-treatment
Perform vascular access cannulation and heparin administration as allowed
Obtain pre and post treatment vital signs, weights, and vascular access evaluations
Initiate dialysis per orders (QB, QD), monitor patient response, and intervene as prescribed
Obtain vital signs before reinfusion, discontinue treatment, evaluate patient, achieve hemostasis, and apply dressings
Evaluate patient prior to discharge and record pre/post evaluations
Calculate and enter patient-specific dialysis programming (UF goal, time, modeling)
Record vital signs and parameters on Hemodialysis Treatment Sheet with initial identification
Document all treatment-related information and report significant changes to RN/supervisor
Conduct machine safety checks and report unusual findings
Monitor vascular access during treatment, intervene as needed, and document/report
Obtain prescribed lab tests and prepare specimens
Clean blood spills per policy
Prepare and utilize supplies/equipment efficiently to prevent wastage
Monitor self-care patients under RN supervision
Assist in training direct patient care staff
Maintain safe and clean working environment
Participate in QEP, CQI, and process improvement activities
