Requirements

  • Functions under direct supervision of a licensed nurse
  • Compliance with organization policies, procedures, training, and state/federal regulations
  • Knowledge of dialysis therapy, including Online Clearance Monitoring (OLC), Adequacy Monitoring Program (AMP), Urea Kinetic Modeling (UKM), disease process/access
  • Ability to evaluate vascular access for patency, perform cannulation, and administer heparin as delegated or allowed by state law
  • Skills in obtaining vital signs, weights, and performing vascular access evaluations
  • Capability to initiate, monitor, and discontinue dialysis treatments per prescribed orders (e.g., QB, QD, UF goal, treatment time, UF modeling)
  • Proficiency in machine programming, safety alarms (e.g., Narrow Venous Limits 160), and documentation on Hemodialysis Treatment Sheet
  • Ability to observe patients, conduct machine safety checks, and report changes to RN/supervisor
  • Competence in laboratory testing, specimen preparation, blood spill cleanup, and supply/equipment management
  • Support for Quality Enhancement Program (QEP), CQI activities, patient satisfaction, and process improvements

Responsibilities

  • Assist in patient education on adequacy measures and disease process/access
  • Welcome patients, inquire about wellbeing, and evaluate vascular access pre-treatment
  • Obtain pre- and post-treatment vital signs, weights, and perform evaluations
  • Initiate dialysis per orders, monitor response, evaluate intradialytic problems, and intervene as prescribed
  • Monitor and document vital signs, treatment parameters, and patient response during reinfusion and discontinuation
  • Discontinue treatment, achieve hemostasis, apply dressings, and evaluate patient prior to discharge
  • Calculate and enter patient-specific dialysis programming (UF goal, time, modeling)
  • Ensure safety alarms are enabled and record accurate information on treatment sheets/progress notes
  • Report significant changes or unusual findings to RN/supervisor
  • Perform/document interventions for unusual patient status, vascular access monitoring, and machine safety checks
  • Obtain/pack lab specimens, clean blood spills, and manage supplies/equipment efficiently
  • Monitor self-care patients under RN supervision
  • Assist in training direct patient care staff on applicable programs
  • Maintain safe/clean working environment and support QEP/CQI activities
