Requirements

Functions under direct supervision of a licensed nurse in accordance with organization policies, procedures, training, and compliance with corporation, state, and federal regulations
Knowledge of dialysis therapy, including setup and operation of hemodialysis machines
Ability to perform vascular access evaluation, cannulation, and heparin administration as delegated or allowed by state law
Skills in monitoring patient vital signs, weights, and responses during dialysis treatment
Proficiency in dialysis machine programming for Ultrafiltration (UF) goal, treatment time, UF modeling, blood flow (QB), dialysate flow (QD), and safety alarms (e.g., Narrow Venous Limits 160)
Competence in documentation on Hemodialysis Treatment Sheet and progress notes
Ability to assist in patient education on adequacy measures (OLC, AMP, UKM) and disease process/access
Participation in Quality Enhancement Program (QEP), CQI activities, process improvement, and patient satisfaction initiatives
Participation in recruitment process for new staff

Responsibilities

Assist in providing patient-specific education on adequacy measures (OLC, AMP, UKM) and disease process/access
Welcome patients, inquire about wellbeing, evaluate vascular access for patency, cannulate access, and administer heparin as allowed
Obtain pre- and post-treatment vital signs, weights, and perform vascular access evaluations
Initiate, monitor, and discontinue dialysis treatments per prescribed orders, including QB, QD, UF goals, and modeling
Evaluate intradialytic problems, intervene as prescribed, monitor patient response, and obtain vital signs before reinfusion
Perform hemostasis, apply dressings, evaluate patient prior to discharge, and record pre/post evaluations
Calculate and enter patient-specific dialysis machine programming and ensure safety alarms are enabled
Record accurate vital signs, treatment parameters, and documentation on Hemodialysis Treatment Sheet and progress notes
Report significant patient changes or unusual findings to registered nurse or supervisor
Conduct machine safety checks, observe patients, document interventions for unusual status
Monitor arterial/venous pressures, provide interventions, obtain lab specimens, clean blood spills
Prepare and utilize supplies/equipment efficiently, monitor self-care patients under RN supervision
Assist in maintaining safe, clean working environment and support QEP/CQI activities
Participate in staff recruitment process
