Requirements

Functions under direct supervision of a licensed nurse
Compliance with organization policies, procedures, training, and state/federal regulations
Knowledge of dialysis therapy, including adequacy measures (OLC, AMP, UKM), disease process/access, vascular access evaluation, cannulation, heparin administration (as delegated or allowed by state law)
Ability to setup and operate hemodialysis machines, including programming for UF goal, treatment time, UF modeling, and enabling safety alarms (e.g., Narrow Venous Limits 160)
Skills in obtaining vital signs, weights, pre/post treatment evaluations, hemostasis, dressings, and laboratory specimen preparation
Participation in Quality Enhancement Program (QEP), CQI activities, process improvement, and patient satisfaction initiatives
Ability to maintain safe and clean working environment, conduct machine safety checks, clean blood spills, and manage supplies/equipment efficiently
Accurate and timely documentation on Hemodialysis Treatment Sheet and progress notes
Observation and monitoring skills for patient response, intradialytic problems, vascular access (arterial/venous pressures), and reporting changes to RN/supervisor
Participation in staff recruitment process

Responsibilities

Assist in patient education on adequacy measures (OLC, AMP, UKM) and disease process/access
Welcome patients, inquire about wellbeing, evaluate vascular access for patency, cannulate, administer heparin
Obtain pre/post treatment vital signs, weights, and vascular access evaluations
Initiate dialysis per orders (QB, QD), monitor response, evaluate intradialytic problems, intervene as prescribed
Obtain vital signs pre-reinfusion, discontinue treatment, evaluate patient (standing/sitting BP), achieve hemostasis, apply dressings
Evaluate patient prior to discharge, perform/record pre/post evaluations, weights, vital signs
Calculate and enter patient-specific dialysis programming (UF goal, time, modeling), ensure safety alarms enabled
Record vital signs/treatment parameters on Hemodialysis Treatment Sheet, complete documentation including progress notes
Report significant patient changes/unusual findings to RN/supervisor
Observe patients, conduct machine safety checks, document interventions for unusual status
Monitor vascular access during treatment, provide interventions, document/report findings
Obtain prescribed lab tests, prepare specimens, clean blood spills per policy
Prepare/organize supplies/equipment to prevent wastage
Monitor/assist patients in self-care under RN supervision
Participate in recruitment process
