Requirements

  • Functions under direct supervision of a licensed nurse
  • Compliance with organization policies, procedures, training, and state/federal regulations
  • Knowledge of dialysis therapy, including adequacy measures (OLC, AMP, UKM), disease process/access, vascular access evaluation, cannulation, heparin administration (as delegated or allowed by state law)
  • Ability to setup and operate hemodialysis machines, including programming for UF goal, treatment time, UF modeling, and enabling safety alarms (e.g., Narrow Venous Limits 160)
  • Skills in obtaining vital signs, weights, vascular access evaluation, initiating/discontinuing dialysis treatments, monitoring intradialytic problems, hemostasis, and applying dressings
  • Accurate documentation on Hemodialysis Treatment Sheet, progress notes, and reporting changes to RN/supervisor
  • Ability to perform machine safety checks, clean blood spills, prepare lab specimens, manage supplies/equipment, and support patient self-care under RN supervision
  • Participation in Quality Enhancement Program (QEP), CQI activities, process improvements, and staff training

Responsibilities

  • Assist in patient education on adequacy measures, disease process, and access
  • Welcome patients, inquire about wellbeing, evaluate vascular access pre-treatment, obtain pre/post vital signs and weights
  • Perform vascular access cannulation and heparin administration as allowed
  • Initiate dialysis per orders (QB, QD), monitor patient response, evaluate intradialytic issues, intervene as prescribed
  • Obtain vital signs pre-reinfusion, discontinue treatment per procedures, evaluate patient (standing/sitting BP), achieve hemostasis, apply dressings
  • Evaluate patient pre-discharge, record pre/post evaluations, weights, vital signs
  • Calculate and enter patient-specific dialysis programming (UF goal, time, modeling)
  • Ensure safety alarms enabled, record vital signs/treatment parameters accurately
  • Document all treatment info, report significant changes to RN/supervisor
  • Conduct machine safety checks, intervene/document unusual patient status or findings
  • Monitor vascular access during treatment (arterial/venous pressures), report issues
  • Obtain lab testing, prepare specimens, clean blood spills
  • Prepare/organize supplies/equipment efficiently
  • Monitor self-care patients under RN supervision
  • Assist in training direct patient care staff
  • Maintain safe/clean environment, support QEP/CQI and patient satisfaction goals
