Position Overview

NPR is a mission-driven multimedia organization producing award-winning news, information, and music programming in partnership with public radio stations nationwide. This externship provides an opportunity to contribute to the Office of the General Counsel (OGC), which delivers high-quality legal services to NPR clients, supporting its public service mission.

Program Duration

  • Fall Externs: Part-time, September 8th, 2025 - December 5th, 2025 (dates may be flexible based on school requirements).
  • NPR offers legal externships throughout the year.
  • Summer externships typically require full-time commitment (40 hours/week for 12 weeks).
  • Fall and Spring externships can be part-time (15-20 hours/week) or full-time.
  • Fall and Spring externships must be for course credit.

Introduction to Position

NPR seeks a 2L or 3L law student with a strong interest and comprehensive knowledge of copyright law and fair use principles. This externship offers valuable practical experience in fair use analysis, rights management, and audio licensing processes.

NPR is currently interviewing for Fall 2025 externs.

Extern Responsibilities

The extern will gain practical experience in copyright, fair use, and audio licensing by assisting senior counsel with tasks such as:

  • Evaluating copyright issues in audio and occasional video content.
  • Conducting research on copyright matters.
  • Making fair use determinations.
  • Drafting and/or organizing permissions agreements.
  • Assessing legal aspects of proposed licensing agreements.
  • Assisting with Rights Management issues.

Note: This list is not exhaustive, and other duties may be assigned.

Education Requirement

  • Education: Must be a current student in an accredited law degree program.
  • Copyright Course: Must have completed a copyright law course or equivalent and possess a strong understanding of fair use principles. Prior experience with licensing issues is preferred but not required.
