Requirements

  • High School Diploma or GED
  • Associate degree in an industrial maintenance/mechanical discipline or Certificate (Electronics/Electrical Engineering or Instrumentation) or equivalent experience: Without degree, 3 years applicable experience; with Associate degree (2 years), 1 year applicable experience; with Certificate of Completion (18 months), 1 year applicable experience; or Completion of AEP Apprentice progression
  • Job experience relative to this position: Steel mills, paper mills, nuclear, nuclear navy service, chemical, oil refinery, power plant, or similar industry
  • Appropriate State driver's license
  • Successful completion of the Power Plant Maintenance Selection System (MASS) test
  • Residency within 1 hour drive of Welsh Plant under normal driving conditions
  • Willing to work rotating shifts including weekends, nights, and holidays
  • Minimum long distance travel required; able to inspect remote equipment daily
  • Able to respond to callouts in both outage and non-outage work
  • Able to learn and comply with all applicable plant operating instructions, procedures, rules, and safety requirements

Responsibilities

  • Assist in performing work to ensure reliable operation of all plant machinery and mechanical equipment by troubleshooting problems, performing preventive and corrective maintenance tasks using drawings, sketches, operations manuals, manufacturer's instructions, and engineering specifications
  • Report irregularities and abnormal conditions to appropriate supervision
  • Actively participate in continuous improvement activities
  • Learn to perform preventive and corrective maintenance on all mechanical components of plant equipment
  • Learn to diagnose, troubleshoot, align, repair, and maintain mechanical, pneumatic, and hydraulic systems and components such as boilers, turbine generators, pumps, control valves, fans, other rotating equipment, and associated piping
  • Learn to operate machine shop and portable machine equipment (lathes, shapers, drill presses, milling machines, boring bars) to produce accurate tolerances, develop simple jigs and fixtures, and perform precision fitting under direction of journeyman or supervisor
  • Assist in the use of monitoring equipment such as vibration and thermal test equipment to assess equipment conditions
  • Learn to perform electric arc and oxyacetylene structural welding to repair equipment; perform oxyacetylene cutting, heating, and brazing on piping and structural components
  • Erect and remove scaffolding; perform rigging, lifting, and blocking
  • Operate and maintain mobile equipment (manlifts, forklifts, backhoes) and perform pre-use inspections
  • Assist with preparing, updating, and maintaining records and documentation
  • Obtain basic knowledge of industrial processes and systems
