Requirements

  • Proof of English/Spanish fluency, both oral and written, through certified accredited institution or by passing interpreter’s skills test administered through Avera
  • Technical Certificate
  • Pass a medical terminology test
  • Visual acuity adequate to perform position duties
  • Ability to communicate effectively with others, hear, understand, and distinguish speech and other sounds
  • Preferred: Some College Interpreter Training
  • Preferred: Some College Health Science
  • Preferred: Experience in a healthcare setting as a medical interpreter with strong medical vocabulary

Responsibilities

  • Relay accurate medical information and facilitate successful delivery of patient services to diverse language segments in compliance with office, clinic, and hospital policies, particularly patient confidentiality and informed consent
  • Provide written translations for patient encounters, including forms, care instructions, medication schedules, patient letters, and other documents
  • Serve as facilitator for language patient services to linguistically diverse consumers and act as cultural and linguistic resource to patients and providers
  • Provide high level of customer service with positive approach, teamwork, and cooperation
  • Work with diverse cultural/socio-economic backgrounds and general knowledge of cultural backgrounds
  • Support office operations by answering phones, checking voice mails, and following up
  • Take and schedule interpreter requests, verify and schedule future appointments, and document patient encounters
  • Facilitate special projects as assigned, including on-the-job training and mentoring of interpreter internships
  • Travel to various facilities as required
  • Work Monday-Friday part-time day hours (no weekends/no holidays)
