Fullstack Engineer (Liferay)

Position Overview

Agile Six is a people-first, remote-work company dedicated to finding innovative, human-centered solutions for federal agencies. We are seeking a Fullstack Engineer with Liferay experience to join a cross-functional team supporting the Department of Veterans Affairs (VA) on an integrated patient portal for VA.gov. The objective is to enhance Veterans' digital experience by providing a unified platform for managing their VA health care, community care, disability benefits, and other essential information.

Note: This position is anticipated, pending contract award.

Responsibilities

• Develop accessible, performant, and scalable frontend applications within a cross-functional Agile team using open-source technologies and industry-standard frameworks.
• Maintain and enhance legacy Liferay and Liferay DXP applications.
• Collaborate with product and design teams to re-platform features into modern web and mobile experiences.
• Write and maintain Java code for Liferay components, implement bug fixes, and manage technical debt.
• Ensure compliance with VA security standards.
• Integrate with VA APIs and backend services, ensuring secure, accurate data rendering and discoverability via the Lighthouse API Hub.
• Implement and maintain automated testing (unit, integration, functional, load, accessibility) for comprehensive functionality coverage.
• Leverage AI-powered IDEs (e.g., Copilot, Cursor) for code analysis, feature development, unit testing, and debugging, while maintaining oversight and reviewing all AI-generated work.
• Support performance monitoring, Tier 3 triage, and incident response for Liferay-based systems, ensuring timely issue resolution and documentation.
• Utilize VA cloud platforms and CI/CD pipelines for scalable, reliable, and automated deployments, prioritizing reuse of existing infrastructure.
• Uphold Zero Trust security principles, ensuring sensitive data is never exposed in source code.
• Contribute all non-sensitive code and documentation to public repositories unless otherwise directed.
• Participate in pair programming, in-depth peer reviews, and blameless post-mortems, continuously incorporating learnings.
• Support the Engineering Community of Practice and Agile Six engineering culture through knowledge sharing, mentoring, and participation in internal initiatives.

Basic Qualifications

• 5+ years of professional engineering experience.
• In-depth knowledge of Java and at least one frontend technology.
• Experience with Java and legacy Liferay or Liferay Digital Experience Platform (DXP).
• Experience experimenting with and/or utilizing AI tools and services for software creation and delivery, with a strong willingness to leverage AI for improved outcomes.
• Hands-on experience with CI/CD pipelines, automated testing, and cloud infrastructure (AWS, Docker, Kubernetes, or similar).
• Experience with measurement and monitoring tools (e.g., Datadog) and a strong understanding of application observability.
• Familiarity with secure development best practices and Zero Trust principles.
• Ability to safeguard sensitive data while working in an open-source environment.
