Requirements

  • Ability to work rotating days/evenings/nights/weekends (PRN, as needed)
  • Theological and clinical training to help patients, families, and staff cope with illness, trauma, death, and loss
  • Ability to assess patient's spiritual practices/values and integrate them into the medical plan of care
  • Proficiency in planning, facilitating, coordinating, and delivering leadership of spirituality groups, ecumenical devotional services, family conferences, public prayers, dedications, and remembrance services
  • Ability to serve as liaison to Catholic Chaplains for Sacramental Roman Catholic Ministry and to community clergy
  • Ability to document relevant spiritual information in the electronic record while maintaining confidentiality

Responsibilities

  • Minister to the spiritual and emotional needs of patients, families, residents, and staff
  • Collaborate with peers, employees, leaders, and the interdisciplinary health care team using theological and clinical training
  • Work with patients/families to understand implications of medical treatment in the framework of their spiritual beliefs, address difficult issues, and support the health care team
  • Consult and debrief with Avera departments, groups, and staff in response to unexpected or unsettling events
  • Communicate with the interdisciplinary team about patient's condition, family dynamics, and spiritual care needs
  • Plan, facilitate, coordinate, and deliver pastoral and spiritual care to patients, families, and staff via consultations, referrals, requests, or rounding
  • Explore patient and family beliefs and meaning in illness and crisis, respecting their goals, desires, and choices
  • Gather and evaluate data pertinent to the patient’s bio-psycho-social-spiritual/religious health; perform assessments and reassessments to assist in plan of care development
  • Assist patients, families, and staff in crises, bereavement, and end-of-life decisions; address distress
  • Provide encouragement and support during illness, empowering use of spiritual/religious strengths for healing
  • Liaise with Catholic Chaplains and community clergy for patient/family needs; advocate for visits within policies
  • Document relevant information in the electronic record regarding medical, psycho-social, and spiritual/religious goals
