Responsibilities
Plans computerized databases, including base definition, structure, documentation, long-range requirements, operational guidelines and protection
Ensures accuracy and completeness of data in master files and various support tools, such as base dictionaries
Establishes and maintains security and integrity controls
Formulates and monitors policies, procedures and standards relating to database management
Proposes and implements enhancements that will improve the performance and reliability of the system
Works in close liaison with more experienced Database Administrators (DBAs) to learn processes and techniques for testing database software, utilities, and patches in a test environment
Observes more experienced DBAs during the migration of tested/approved database software, utilities, and patches to a production environment
Observes and supports more experienced DBAs to learn how to properly complete authentication and authorization requests by creating/purging/maintaining user accounts, adding/deleting/modifying table and data permissions and performing and/or setting up scheduled database audit procedures to track the who/when changes are made or new items are created
Learns established database back-up tasks by assisting as directed
Observes a more experienced DBA during a disaster recovery and/or recovery exercises to build a familiarization with the database recovery tasks
Supports more experienced DBAs with storage and capacity planning by executing established reports and gathering additional data as directed
Observes more experienced DBAs to learn basic database tuning, optimizing, and monitoring techniques
Observes and occasionally supports more experienced DBAs during application failures to learn troubleshooting techniques
Gathers data/reporting to support the production and maintenance of operational database documentation, such as SQL Disaster Recovery, SQL Recovery Presentation, Naming Standards, Performance and Tuning
