Committee to Form Member - AMS Las Vegas

Employment Type: Part-time Location Type: Hybrid (Remote/In-person) Salary: Volunteer

Position Overview

The Academies of Math and Science (AMS), a nationally recognized network of high-performing charter schools, is expanding to Nevada. We are seeking passionate community members, educators, and professionals to join a Committee to Form for a new K–8 public charter school in the Las Vegas area. This committee is a precursor to a Board of Directors and will play a crucial role in laying the foundation for AMS Las Vegas and bringing high-quality education to underserved communities.

Your Mission

As a Committee to Form member, you will:

  • Shape the Vision: Collaborate with other committee members and AMS leadership to draft and refine the school’s mission, values, and charter application.
  • Advise and Advocate: Provide insight and guidance on academic design, operational planning, and community engagement strategies.
  • Engage the Community: Serve as an ambassador in the Las Vegas area, helping build local partnerships and community trust.
  • Ensure Readiness: Help ensure the school is legally, academically, and operationally prepared to open on time and on mission.

This is a volunteer opportunity with a time commitment of 1–2 hours per month through the development phase. Members must be Nevada residents at the time of charter submission.

Who We’re Looking For

Per Nevada state law, the Committee to Form must include individuals with the following qualifications:

Required Members:

  • One licensed educator, either currently or formerly licensed under NRS Chapter 391 (retirees welcome if previously in good standing).
  • One school administrator, currently or formerly licensed in Nevada or another state (retirees welcome if previously in good standing) – or another licensed educator as above.
  • One parent or legal guardian who is not an employee of the proposed school.
  • Two professionals with expertise in one or more of the following areas:
    • Accounting
    • Financial services
    • Law
    • Human Resources

Optional Additional Members (up to 4):

  • Members of the general public
  • Representatives of nonprofits or local businesses
  • Faculty or staff from Nevada System of Higher Education institutions

Why Join AMS’s Committee to Form?

  • Impact: Help launch a school that will empower students through rigorous academics and character development.
  • Growth: Gain meaningful board and leadership experience while making lasting change.
  • Community: Collaborate with a diverse, mission-driven team dedicated to educational equity.
  • Legacy: Be a founding voice of AMS Las Vegas—your contributions will shape its future.

More About AMS

Founded in 2002, the Academies of Math and Science (AMS) now serve over 9,000 K–8 students across 10 schools in Arizona and Arkansas. Our schools offer a rigorous, well-rounded education—tuition-free—primarily to underserved communities (93% minority, 80% FRL). AMS is Arizona’s largest and highest-performing K–8 charter network serving low-income students, with multiple campuses ranked among the best in the state. Our Peoria campus received the National Blue Ribbon Award for both academic excellence and closing achievement gaps.

With nearly 300 Las Vegas families already expressing interest, we see powerful momentum and a clear need. We are looking for leaders to help guide this next chapter.
