Position Overview

We are seeking an experienced ASL Interpreter to join our team and enhance clarity, equity, and connection within virtual classrooms. As a teletherapy-based interpreter, you will play a crucial role in ensuring Deaf and Hard-of-Hearing students have full, real-time access to learning, regardless of their location. Your work will bridge communication gaps in various educational settings, from academic lessons to important meetings and school events, ensuring every voice is heard and every message is understood.

Responsibilities

  • Provide live, synchronous interpretation (spoken English ↔ ASL) for virtual instruction, Individualized Education Program (IEP) meetings, school events, and other relevant activities.
  • Collaborate with educators to optimize the remote learning experience for students who are Deaf/Hard-of-Hearing.
  • Ensure seamless technology setup and secure connections, managing aspects like lighting and potential lag.
  • Shadow students virtually to provide real-time, discreet access to instruction.
  • Offer insights during IEP meetings and team huddles to support student communication needs.
  • Maintain clear records of assignments, sessions, and accommodations provided.
  • Act as a champion for language access in all interactions, including classrooms, parent meetings, and school-wide events.

Requirements

  • Restricted Certification in Education (RCED) for grades K–6 and/or 7–12 via the Missouri Interpreters Certification System (MICS).
  • Strong command of both American Sign Language (ASL) and spoken English.
  • Demonstrated experience interpreting in K–12 educational environments, including classrooms, assemblies, and IEP meetings.
  • Proficiency with virtual platforms such as Zoom and Microsoft Teams, coupled with strong technical troubleshooting skills.
  • A deep understanding of Deaf/Hard-of-Hearing (DHH) education, assistive technologies, and relevant compliance standards (ADA/IDEA).
  • A collaborative spirit and excellent communication skills.
  • Ability to pass a background check as per district requirements.
