Requirements

Candidates should possess 15+ years of experience developing control systems for fixed-wing aircraft, demonstrating a strong understanding of fixed-wing aircraft dynamics, classical and modern control design/analysis, and experience decomposing systems requirements into high-level requirements for both outer loop and inner loop control design. They should also have experience working in Model-Based Development and certification of flight control systems, including proficiency in MATLAB/Simulink or similar tools, and experience designing, implementing, and testing software for real-time systems. Furthermore, experience developing certified software under RTCA DO-178B in Aerospace/Mechanical/Electrical Engineering is desired, along with a Master’s or Doctoral degree in Aerospace Engineering and/or Controls, and familiarity with aircraft simulations using system identification of flight test data.

Responsibilities

The Staff Engineer, Flight Controls will design and implement flight controls for Merlin’s aircraft autonomy system, write requirements for high-level automation functions and low-level flight control, help create and use simulation tools including Simulink control law modeling, analysis using MATLAB and Python, participate in flight testing to verify control law performance on multiple aircraft types, write, test, and document Simulink control law models according to Merlin’s development standards, and participate in certification activities. They will also collaborate across Merlin to develop novel, certifiable systems to solve challenging problems in aviation and autonomy.

Merlin Labs

Develops autonomous flight technology for aircraft

About Merlin Labs

Merlin Labs develops autonomous flight technology, specifically the Merlin Pilot, an advanced system designed to operate aircraft without human intervention. This system can be integrated into various types of aircraft, making it adaptable to different sizes and ages. The technology is being developed in collaboration with aviation authorities like the U.S. Federal Aviation Administration and the Civil Aviation Authority of New Zealand to ensure it meets safety and regulatory standards. Unlike competitors, Merlin Labs takes a phased approach by initially pairing the autonomous system with human pilots, which helps ensure safety and build trust in the technology. The goal is to provide a scalable solution for commercial airlines, cargo transport companies, and private aircraft owners, positioning Merlin Labs as a significant player in the future of aviation.
