Requirements

  • Insurance defense experience including both personal lines and commercial lines cases (preferred)
  • Seasoned litigation attorney with significant civil litigation experience in property and casualty insurance defense or subrogation
  • Academic credentials, strong analytical skills, and legal acumen for successful litigation work
  • Requisite trial advocacy skills to independently handle matters as lead counsel or as part of a team
  • Efficiency, proactive case management, strong work ethic, and high-quality work product in accordance with Nationwide Trial Division (NTD) standard methodology guidelines, claims, and client expectations
  • Minimal need for managerial oversight and guidance from the Managing Trial Attorney and NTD Leadership
  • Adept at utilizing technology and collaborating with support staff for efficient case management
  • Consistent awareness of changes to the law, technology, local rules, procedural requirements, and legal/insurance industry impacts on litigation strategies
  • Subject matter expertise and trial advocacy skills for all NTD concentrations held, with ability and willingness to develop new concentrations as needed
  • Ability to provide factually, legally, and analytically sound opinions on case valuations, promptly updated and communicated
  • Ability to independently establish and maintain strong professional relationships with key associates in the Office of the Chief Legal Officer, claims partners, and industry colleagues
  • Highly effective communication skills, proactively identifying issues

Responsibilities

  • Represent clients under commercial and personal lines insurance policies independently as lead counsel or as part of a team
  • Handle a highly productive caseload of mixed complexity, severity, product lines, and concentrations across courts and agencies in assigned jurisdictions
  • Demonstrate trial advocacy skills, efficiency, proactive case management, work ethic, and work product quality per NTD guidelines and client expectations
  • Utilize technology and collaborate with support staff for efficient case management
  • Stay aware of legal, technological, procedural, and industry changes impacting litigation strategies
  • Perform with expertise in NTD concentrations and develop new ones as required
  • Provide sound, updated case valuation opinions to clients and claims
  • Build and maintain professional relationships to enhance NTD's reputation and expand case referrals
  • Communicate effectively and proactively
