Position Overview

Planet designs, builds, and operates the largest constellation of imaging satellites in history. Our mission is to use space to help life on Earth by delivering an unprecedented dataset of empirical information via a revolutionary cloud-based platform. We are seeking a Software Engineer to join our Automated Mosaics team, responsible for producing Planet’s Mosaic (or “Basemap”) products. These products combine image processing and engineering expertise to create spatially and temporally consistent views of Earth at a global scale, used by customers across commercial, civil government, defense and intelligence, research, and nonprofit sectors for applications like global renewables watch, deforestation monitoring, and ecosystem monitoring.

About the Role

As a Software Engineer on the Automated Mosaics team, you will be instrumental in maintaining and enhancing Planet’s Mosaic products. You will focus on improving mosaicing algorithms, ensuring reliable and efficient data production at a global scale, and owning the systems that manage data production scheduling. You will collaborate with teams responsible for compute infrastructure, satellite data acquisition and quality control, and individual image processing to ensure high image quality and smooth delivery.

Impact You'll Own

  • Maintain and improve the image processing algorithms that create Planet’s Mosaic products.
  • Ensure that data production runs reliably and efficiently at a global scale.
  • Guarantee that data requested by our customers is available when needed.
  • Collaborate with upstream teams (handling individual image acquisition and processing) and downstream teams (delivering data to customers or using mosaic machinery for other Planet products) to ensure high image quality and smooth delivery.

What You Bring

  • 4+ years of experience in a related field.
  • Proficiency in scientific Python development.
  • Familiarity with image processing methods or geospatial algorithms and data.
  • Experience running workloads at scale in production.
  • Excellent written communication skills to support asynchronous remote collaboration.
  • Experience with collaborative coding tools such as GitHub or GitLab.
  • Ability and willingness to quickly learn new skills as needed.

What Makes You Stand Out

  • Experience working with satellite imagery.
  • Project management experience.
  • Experience with logging, alerting, and monitoring tools for software.
