Requirements

Functions as part of the dialysis health care team under direct supervision of a licensed nurse
Compliance with organization policies, procedures, training, and state/federal regulations
Ability to setup and operate hemodialysis machines
Knowledge of patient education on adequacy measures (OLC, AMP, UKM) and disease process/access
Skills in vascular access evaluation, cannulation, and heparin administration (as delegated or allowed by state law)
Ability to perform vital signs, weights, and pre/post dialysis evaluations
Competence in initiating, monitoring, and discontinuing dialysis treatments per prescribed orders
Knowledge of intradialytic interventions, safety alarms (e.g., Narrow Venous Limits 160), and UF modeling
Accurate documentation on Hemodialysis Treatment Sheet and progress notes
Ability to observe patients, conduct machine safety checks, and report changes to RN/supervisor
Skills in laboratory specimen preparation and blood spill cleanup
Efficient use of supplies and equipment to prevent wastage
Support for Quality Enhancement Program (QEP), CQI activities, and process improvements

Responsibilities

Assist in patient education on adequacy measures and disease process/access
Welcome patients, inquire about wellbeing, and evaluate vascular access pre-treatment
Obtain pre/post treatment vital signs, weights, and perform vascular access evaluation/cannulation/heparin administration
Initiate dialysis per orders (QB, QD), monitor response, evaluate intradialytic problems, and intervene as prescribed
Obtain vital signs pre-reinfusion, discontinue treatment, evaluate patient (BP, hemostasis, dressings), and perform pre/post evaluations
Calculate and enter patient-specific dialysis programming (UF goal, time, modeling) and ensure safety alarms are enabled
Record vital signs, treatment parameters, and documentation accurately and timely
Report significant patient changes or unusual findings to RN/supervisor
Conduct machine safety checks and document interventions for unusual patient status
Monitor vascular access during treatment (pressures), intervene as needed, and report findings
Obtain prescribed lab testing, prepare specimens, clean blood spills per policy
Prepare/organize supplies/equipment efficiently and monitor self-care patients under RN supervision
Assist in maintaining safe/clean environment and participate in QEP/CQI/process improvements
Participate in staff recruitment process
