Requirements

  • Licensed Assistant Engineer (implied by job title)
  • Working knowledge of diesel propulsion and electricity generation systems
  • Knowledge of support systems such as fuel centrifuges, air compressors, pumps, hydraulics, water makers, hotel systems, plumbing, refrigeration, heating, and air conditioning
  • Computer experience: Excel spreadsheet experience and Windows applications (including Word)
  • Professional demeanor; ability to use appropriate levels of tact and courtesy
  • Self-starter, able to handle multiple tasks and work with little supervision and in small spaces
  • Ability to work well under pressure, act quickly and decisively using sound judgment (crisis management)
  • Strong communication skills, including some guest contact
  • Familiarity with international, federal, state, and local regulations regarding environmental regulations, CDC Vessel Sanitation Program (VSP), Alaska Department of Environmental Conservation (ADEC), ISM Code, and company Safety Management System
  • Capable of working independently without supervision

Responsibilities

  • Assist the Chief Engineer in the maintenance, operation, and repair of all vessel systems, including hotel equipment
  • Operate and maintain the ship’s propulsion system
  • Operate and maintain the electrical generation and distribution system, including emergency power
  • Operate and maintain potable water and auto chlorination system
  • Operate and maintain black water/gray water/waste tanks, treatment, and testing programs
  • Operate and maintain HVAC and refrigeration systems
  • Perform routine maintenance checks and keep records of jobs performed
  • Keep the Chief Engineer informed of all maintenance and repairs done
  • Help with engineering, deck, and hotel preventative maintenance programs on a daily, weekly, and monthly basis
  • Complete maintenance and repair tasks as requested in the Cabin Maintenance Notebook
  • Perform hotel maintenance tasks as needed
  • Participate in shipyard availabilities
  • Assist Chief Engineer in all bunkering operations
  • Support engineering projects by applying engineering techniques, conducting inspections, and preparing reports
  • Maintain essential communication with the engineering team and the Captain
  • Use NSE to update vessel maintenance records for engineering work items
  • Assist the Chief Engineer with inventories
  • Operate onboard computer using standard and customized software applications
  • Maintain compliance of technical systems with CDC VSP and ADEC regulations
  • Work with the bridge team to maintain compliance with environmental regulations and liaise with the Expeditions team for National Parks or local native environmental regulations
  • Follow company safety and pollution prevention policies and procedures
  • Assist in preparation for U.S. Coast Guard dry docks and other inspections
  • Participate in shoreside training as required
