Candidates should possess an undergraduate degree in statistics, mathematics, bioinformatics, physical sciences, or a related quantitative field, and a solid understanding of statistics and experimental design. Demonstrated experience in working with data, including an understanding of bias, error, confusion, power, and significance is required, along with familiarity with industry-standard languages and tools for data analysis, preferably the Python ecosystem (numpy, pandas, matplotlib, scikit-learn) and SQL. Working familiarity with git and the command line is also necessary, alongside strong written and verbal communication skills, the ability to convert technical results into data stories, and the aptitude for continual learning and growth.
The Freelance Data Scientist will find innovative ways of balancing business goals with statistical, technical, and data constraints, working effectively with other data scientists, strategists, and senior leaders on all phases of work, from pitching new business to delivering results. They will brainstorm new ideas, design experiments, collect and explore data, visualize and communicate findings, and translate technical results into business contexts, while also writing and documenting analysis scripts in Python and SQL, collaborating through git and GitHub. Furthermore, they will extract insights from data using methods such as natural language processing, segmentation and clustering, geospatial analysis, hierarchical Bayesian modeling, Markov chain Monte Carlo, decision trees, and deep neural networks, and guide the structure and objectives of data science projects, presenting results to the team, organization, and clients, and demonstrating comfort with and enthusiasm for integrating AI into their work.
