Requirements

  • Bachelor's degree or some college with Dietetic Internship or similar Academy of Nutrition and Dietetics approved program (unless already registered with CDR)
  • Registered Dietitian with Commission on Dietetic Registration (CDR) within 180 days
  • Licensed Dietitian with Licensing Board in the state based on job assignment within 180 days
  • Visual acuity adequate to perform position duties
  • Ability to communicate effectively with others, hear, understand, and distinguish speech and other sounds
  • Knowledge of age-specific factors for patients from infant through geriatrics
  • Commitment to Avera’s mission, vision, core values, and social principles
  • Uphold Avera’s standards of Communication, Attitude, Responsiveness, and Engagement (CARE)
  • Preferred: 1-3 years experience and advanced certifications in specialty area

Responsibilities

  • Perform accurate and timely assessment of patient’s nutritional status, including nutritional needs, patient/family knowledge, readiness to learn, cultural/religious needs, and physical/mental limitations
  • Plan and implement individualized, outcomes-based nutritional care plan with measurable goals
  • Provide medical nutrition therapy to patients/family based on assessment needs
  • Ensure continuity of nutrition care through communication with relevant care providers at admission and discharge
  • Help transition patients to a new care environment
  • Document all phases of the nutrition care process completely and concisely
  • Develop and interpret patient education classes and/or materials
  • Educate the public by planning and presenting lectures on nutrition therapy and community nutrition
  • Provide guidance to dietetic assistant in identifying and assigning patients to nutritional risk levels using screening/assessment policies and procedures
  • Function as an integral member of an interdisciplinary healthcare team through active participation in team conferences, multidisciplinary care planning, and ongoing communication
