Requirements

  • Minimum of 3 years of experience in news reporting, preferably online
  • Exceptional writing, editing, and communication skills
  • Proven ability to work under tight deadlines and specific targets
  • Ability to work both independently and as part of a team
  • Based outside of the U.S
  • Available to work Saturday and Sunday daytime hours in Australia (8 a.m.-11 a.m. AEST, with flexibility)
  • Deep understanding of American culture, preferably having lived in the U.S. or track record of working for American publications
  • Interest and knowledge in U.S. politics, global news, media, and pop culture

Responsibilities

  • Identify and pitch stories that matter to the audience and write intelligent, exciting copy with a punchy attitude
  • Collaborate with editors and other reporters to ensure comprehensive coverage and bring fresh ideas and angles
  • Produce clean, concise, and accurate copy in a fast-paced breaking news environment
  • Locate original sources, make calls, create sources, and conduct interviews if necessary
  • Adapt to new CMS and systems to improve reader experience
  • Write across topics including U.S. politics, world news, entertainment, sport, media, and weather
  • Communicate effectively across multiple time zones with the global team
  • Identify and download video to add to stories
  • Identify news outlets to check for scoops during shifts
  • Be fluent across various social media platforms
  • Understand the Daily Beast’s voice and dynamic tone
