Requirements

  • Associate degree in nursing, required
  • Registered Nurse licensed by Wisconsin State Board of Nursing; license must be in good standing
  • American Heart Association Healthcare Provider CPR certification or American Red Cross Professional Rescue required within 30 days of hire; annual re-certification required
  • Formal training in management of the aggressive patient required within 60 days of hire; annual re-certification required
  • Previous psychiatric experience with children, adolescents, and adults preferred

Responsibilities

  • Coordinate the admission process by collaborating with referral sources, physicians, and other staff to ensure efficient and timely patient entry
  • Obtain, review, and verify physician orders (including but not limited to admission orders) as needed
  • Obtain, review, and verify admitting patient’s medication history per protocol
  • Document patient information, assessments, and interventions accurately and in compliance with facility policies and regulatory standards
  • Complete and ensure completeness of all admission-related documentation and ensure submission within required timeframes
  • Orient patients and their families (if applicable) to the hospital’s policies, procedures, and treatment environment
  • Provide education to patients and families (if applicable) about treatment plans, medications, and patient rights
  • Monitor and report any changes in patients’ conditions during the admission process to the attending physician promptly
  • Communicate and collaborate effectively with multidisciplinary teams, including social workers, therapists, medical staff, and psychiatric providers, to ensure comprehensive patient care
  • Act as a liaison between the hospital, referral sources, and patient support systems to ensure a smooth transition into care
  • Adhere to hospital policies, procedures, and behavioral health regulations to maintain patient safety and confidentiality
  • Maintain a safe and therapeutic environment by monitoring patient behavior and implementing de-escalation techniques as needed
  • Act as an advocate for patients
  • Participate in quality improvement initiatives and training programs to enhance the admission process and patient care delivery
  • Perform other related duties as assigned to support patient care and the nursing department
