About the Role

Mozilla is developing the future of the web, emphasizing speed, privacy, inclusivity, and a people-first approach. As mobile devices become the primary internet access point for billions, the mission to provide a secure, transparent, and user-centric browser is paramount.

The company is seeking a Staff Android Engineer to contribute to the evolution of Firefox for Android, an open-source browser with over 100 million downloads on the Google Play Store. In this role, the engineer will influence architecture, mentor other engineers, and guide technical direction, contributing to a product that embodies Mozilla's values of openness, innovation, and privacy. This position is ideal for individuals passionate about creating high-impact software and contributing to a healthier internet.

Responsibilities

  • Design, debug, build, and deploy medium to large-scale Android solutions that promote a healthy and inclusive internet.
  • Drive engineering decisions and feature development with a strong emphasis on delivering user value.
  • Join a dedicated, diverse, and geographically distributed team responsible for Firefox mobile applications and its open-source Android components.
  • Collaborate closely with partners to understand, define, clarify scope, solidify requirements, and drive initiatives.
  • Effectively communicate the engineering perspective and discuss complex topics with both technical and non-technical team members.
  • Define and maintain quality standards through constructive code reviews, bug fixing, testing, and coding practices.
  • Work closely with specialist Gecko teams to integrate browser functionality into Android.
  • Address technical challenges across various layers, from the Java API to JavaScript and the C++ browser engine.
  • Provide solutions and feedback to Mozilla's vibrant open-source community to enhance Android solutions and support Mozilla's manifesto.

Requirements

  • Extensive experience in building complex applications for a broad user base using Java, Kotlin, and/or C++.
  • Proven ability to resolve problems, signal risks, foster change, and facilitate collaborative decision-making.
  • Passion for building excellent products and a strong sense of ownership, from design to bug resolution.
  • Proficiency in modern programming practices, including code review, unit testing, and automation.
  • Rust programming experience and knowledge are considered a plus.
  • Ability to lead other developers and collaborate effectively within a fast-paced team environment to deliver well-designed, reusable, and high-quality code on time.
  • Proactive in asking questions and proposing new insights for positive impact.
  • Desire to work with, learn from, and grow with an outstanding group of people.
