About the Role

We are seeking an experienced Senior Database Administrator to design, maintain, and build the database infrastructure that supports Upgrade’s core operations. This role involves managing data storage, performance, and access, as well as contributing to the development of new database solutions to accommodate business growth.

Responsibilities

  • Configure, monitor, maintain, and enhance the performance and reliability of SQL Server databases and data stores.
  • Participate in all database-related activities, including backup and recovery, upgrades, patching, and performance tuning.
  • Collaborate with engineering teams to define and implement best practices for database operations, evolving and scaling our SQL Server database architecture.
  • Develop standards and procedures to optimize DBMS performance, scalability, resilience, security, and data integrity for SQL Server.
  • Be on-call for supporting SQL Server clusters.
  • Provide production environment support in AWS and debug database issues.
  • Identify opportunities to introduce and develop automation tooling to improve the efficiency of database administration.

Requirements

  • Previous DBA experience with high-throughput SQL Server databases in an AWS environment.
  • 5+ years of experience administering production, always-on, high-throughput, OLTP RDBMS on Microsoft SQL Server.
  • Advanced knowledge of SQL query execution, execution analysis and optimization, indexing strategies, and partitioning.
  • Advanced knowledge of SQL schema modeling and evolution.
  • Proficiency in various RDBMS replication strategies.
  • Solid Windows fundamentals, including kernel, filesystem, and OS tuning as they relate to DB performance and security.
  • Excellent troubleshooting, documentation, and communication skills.
  • Knowledge of MSSQL replication strategies (log shipping, etc.) and Always On Availability Groups.
  • Knowledge of MSSQL Change Tracking (CT) and MS-CDC.
  • Good knowledge of PowerShell.

Nice to Have

  • Proficiency with Ansible on Windows.
  • Experience supporting Linux-based MSSQL instances.
  • Experience with geo-redundant database deployments (active/active, active/standby, etc.).
