Freelance Copy Editor - Technical Financial Content

Employment Type: Contract

Location Type: Remote

Salary: Not Specified

Company Overview

The financial industry is experiencing unprecedented growth, yet its data providers often lag behind with cumbersome onboarding, complicated APIs, slow infrastructure, and high licensing costs. Databento is revolutionizing this landscape as a next-generation market data provider. Our core philosophy is that users should only pay for the data they consume. We empower leading global finance and fintech institutions and have significantly lowered the entry barrier for startups, attracting over 4000 users in our first year. Our team comprises seasoned professionals from prominent firms such as Two Sigma, Belvedere, Pico, Flow Traders, and Tower Research.

Position Overview

Databento is seeking a Freelance Copy Editor for a contract role. This position will focus on editing technical financial content, specifically reviewing a substantial collection of terms and detailed explanations relevant to professional trading and investment workflows. The ideal candidate will possess prior experience editing complex financial or regulatory materials, ensuring accuracy, consistency, and clarity throughout all entries.

We are particularly interested in candidates who demonstrate critical thinking and independent analysis of content. While AI tools can be supportive, this role emphasizes strong human judgment and original insight over reliance on generative tools like ChatGPT.

Responsibilities

As the lead editor on a high-visibility content project centered on trading and investment workflows, you will:

  • Edit and proofread technical definitions and explanatory content for accuracy, clarity, and appropriate tone.
  • Ensure consistency in style, structure, and formatting across all content entries.
  • Cross-check facts and terminology against primary source materials.
  • Verify the accuracy and currency of regulatory references (e.g., SEC, FINRA, tax code).
  • Rewrite sections as necessary to ensure originality while preserving the original meaning.
  • Review content directly within our CMS, identifying and flagging formatting issues or inconsistencies.
  • Propose improvements to enhance readability without compromising technical accuracy.

Desired Qualifications

The ideal candidate will have a proven track record of editing technical content within the legal or financial industry, exhibiting a keen eye for detail and an institutional perspective. Additional desired attributes include:

  • Ability to differentiate between generic AI-generated language and content that provides genuine value.
  • Capacity for independent work and maintaining consistency across a large volume of content.
  • A strong, relevant portfolio showcasing financial, legal, and/or technical content.
  • Demonstrated project leadership capabilities, managing projects from inception to completion.
  • Excellent command of editorial standards and exceptional attention to detail.
  • Experience with CMS tools (familiarity with Markdown is a plus).
  • Familiarity with trading operations or asset management terminology.

Application Instructions

Please include a sample portfolio or website link with your application.
