Requirements

Candidates should have at least 3 years of editorial experience, preferably in personal essays, features, or human-interest storytelling. A proven ability to edit narrative nonfiction with a strong grasp of voice, structure, pacing, and emotional arc is essential. Exceptional writing and editing skills with meticulous attention to detail, grammar, and tone are required, along with experience working with diverse writers. Strong news judgment, cultural awareness, excellent communication and collaboration skills, and comfort handling sensitive topics are necessary. The ability to manage multiple deadlines and familiarity with content management systems and audience analytics are also required. A Bachelor's degree in journalism, English, communications, or a related field, or equivalent experience, is needed.

Responsibilities

The Essays Editor will commission and curate compelling first-person essays that align with Newsweek's voice, values, and editorial standards. They will identify emerging voices and diverse perspectives, develop strong writer relationships, and edit pieces for clarity, structure, and tone. Collaboration with other editorial teams for content packaging and promotion, maintaining an editorial calendar, and evaluating submissions for quality, originality, and relevance are key duties. The role involves tracking performance metrics to inform strategies, upholding ethical standards, and contributing to editorial strategy through planning and brainstorming. Copy editing and publishing non-essays content as needed is also part of the role.
