Scala Engineer

Position Overview

As a Scala Engineer at commercetools, you will collaborate with enthusiastic, experienced Software Engineers in an agile, international environment utilizing a modern tech stack including functional programming, GraphQL, and Scala. Our Search team is dedicated to building customer-facing search APIs for product discovery. Scala Engineers at commercetools tackle complex challenges, work with passion, and maintain a focus on the big picture while contributing to one of the world's most advanced e-commerce platforms.

Note:

• commercetoolers within a 60km radius of our Berlin office will work in a hybrid model, spending three days per week in the office. Local/hybrid job postings can be found on our careers page.
• Sponsorship is available for individuals relocating to Berlin.

Your Mission

• Design and implement search functionalities within a PaaS eCommerce Scala backend.
• Develop a scalable and multi-tenant architecture.
• Analyze user needs and discuss technical approaches.
• Test software components for usability, functionality, and performance, collaborating closely with Product, Management, and DevOps teams.
• Participate in an on-call rotation for production systems with a globally distributed team.

Requirements

• Proven experience as a Software Engineer working with Scala.
• Deep understanding of functional programming and practical experience with Scala, including developing server-side systems using the JVM.
• Exposure to Elasticsearch (preferred), Solr, OpenSearch, or Lucene.
• Experience with parallel and asynchronous programming, as well as non-blocking I/O.
• Background in developing REST APIs and knowledge of scalable architectures (including sharding, replication, load balancing, and failover).
• A strong desire for continuous self-improvement and learning new technologies and concepts.
• Openness to infrastructure work and familiarity with technologies like Helm, Kubernetes, and Rust.
• Fluent English communication skills for effective collaboration in international teams.
