NPR is a mission-driven multimedia organization producing award-winning news, information, and music programming in partnership with public radio stations nationwide. NPR values information, creativity, curiosity, and social responsibility. This internship offers a unique opportunity to gain experience in both editorial graphics and web archiving.

The internship is divided into two parts, each hosted by a different team:

Part 1: Editorial Graphics (October - January)

  • Role: Graphics Editor/Designer
  • Focus: Creating information graphics, data visualizations, and special story presentations in collaboration with reporters and editors.
  • Learning Opportunities: Hone data visualization, coding, and reporting skills.

Part 2: Web Archivist, Research, Archives & Data Strategy (RAD) (January - April)

  • Role: Archivist
  • Focus: Archiving over 20 years of NPR's digital content, focusing on planning, curation, stakeholder needs, and technical aspects of web content.
  • Learning Opportunities: Apply and develop knowledge of interactive media and audiovisual assets, evaluate materials, apply metadata, develop training materials, and present findings.

This is an NPR editorial role, and all interns are expected to adhere to the NPR Ethics Handbook.

Responsibilities

Editorial Graphics:

  • Design and develop publication-quality graphics and web presentations on various time scales.
  • Research, analyze, and visualize data for reporting.

RAD:

  • Collaborate with archivists and technologists to develop NPR’s first web archive.
  • Conduct research to help determine best practices for preserving current interactive content.

All intern work will be performed under the close supervision of the host teams.

Requirements

  • Excellent written and oral communication skills.
  • Demonstrated ability to work independently, be attentive to detail, and meet deadlines.
  • Interest in growth and willingness to respond to professional feedback.
  • Demonstrated experience making graphics and designing for the Web.
  • Experience with front-end web technologies (HTML, CSS, JavaScript, D3).
  • Experience designing responsively (from desktop to mobile devices).
  • Familiarity with digital preservation, archiving, and data management.
  • Comfort with spreadsheets and data (CSV, JSON, etc.).
  • Data analysis skills.
